The Master Potter
Yet, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our Potter, and we all are the work of Your hand. Isaiah 64:8 (AMPC)
My daughter is a potter. I am most definitely not gifted in that area, but I’ve learned a little bit about clay and pottery. Clay has to be soft, malleable, to be shaped into something.
And I wonder – are we like that? Do we soften to God’s touch and bend in the direction He wants us to go? Or are we a little hard and resistant, and His hand working in our life feels uncomfortable?
There’s a remedy if we’re struggling to be shaped by God. If clay isn’t soft enough, a potter adds a little more water to make it more pliable.
It’s interesting that in the Bible, water often symbolizes God’s Word. When we spend time in His Word and let it seep into us, the Holy Spirit works truth into all the broken and hardened places. Like water, God’s truth softens us and makes us ready to conform to His will.
Also, if we are feeling set and immovable, or maybe we’re feeling uncertain and useless, we can look to the truth found in Jeremiah 1:5 – Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. Before God even began to form us, He already knew us – He envisioned our shape and purpose.
Will you let God do His work in your life? Will you let Him continue to form you and the path He has for you?
He is the Master Potter, and He’s patiently waiting for you to spend time soaking in His Word. Waiting for you to be soft enough to respond to His gentle touch so that He can shape you into a beautiful creation, used for His glory and purpose.
